One day Workshop on "Emerging Role of Biotechnology in Industries"
Date:feb 26,2010.
OBJECTIVE AND COVERAGE
It is well known that biotechnology is a
future
technology. However, the role of biotechnology
in industries is already evident. Earlier belief
that what chemicals can do, microbes can do
better is being replaced by the wonders of
bioengineering in almost all areas besides food
pharmaceuticals or fermentation industries.
Even in the rural sector anaerobic fermentation
of lignocellulosic wastes or cattle dung is
widely practiced to get biogas or biofertilizer or
manure. Role of microbes in making curd,
vinegar, alcohol, antibiotics, breads etc. is well
known. However, biotechnology is poised to
play a
major role in fuels such as petroleum,
coal, natural gas etc. Industrial biotechnology
is the application of biotechnology for the
processing and production of cleaner fuels,
chemicals, materials and pharmaceuticals. It
uses enzymes, microbes biocatalysts and their
products to make products in sectors such as
energy, chemistry, pharma, food, feedstocks,
agrochemicals, textiles, paper and pulp,
materials, detergents polymers and helps in
combating environmental pollution.
Biotechnology and bioengineering are
used for producing chemicals and materials
otherwise not easily possible by conventional
means. These make the existing processes
more efficient and possibly cleaner. Animal
biotechnology, stem cell biology, human
genetics and genome analysis, biopesticides
bioinformatics etc. are more promising areas of
research and development.
Indian Biotechnology Industry is
advancing towards new heights in alignment
with the growth and progress observed globally
especially biopharamaceutial segment.
Agricultural bioengineering and biotechnology
is also important for India and this also
embraced energy sector by producing biofuels
i.e. biodiesel.
The use of lipase enzymes has been
made by soap and detergent industries but it
can also be used by drug industries for chiral
separation and by energy industry for making
biodiesel. Biomaterials are being developed
not only to replace bones, skin, cornea etc. but
also for making artificial heart, liver or other
important body parts.
Advancements in nanobiotechnology
may afford the reduction of drug amount to a
few nanograms by developing site directed
medicines and these also include
nanobiosensors, nanomotors, biochips,
bioinspired materials, lab-on-a-chip,
nanodiagnostics, endocytosis of
nanoparticles, nano-targeted drug delivery,
nano-rod surgery etc. Biomolecular
nanotechnology has promises in development
of nanofilteration membranes, magnetosomes,
biosensors, artificial retinas, artificial skin etc.
Emerging role of Industrial
Biotehnology and Bioengineering including
Nanobiotechnology in India and other parts of
the world would be discussed during the
workshop.
Several workshops in different areas
such as bioinformatics nanotechnology,
biomass and and other renewable energy
sources, CO2 sequestration and CDM,
environment management, clean coal
technology, fuel cell technology and hydrogen
energy were oganised successfully in the past.
