National Institute of Technology Patna erstwhile Bihar College of Engineering, Patna, is the 6th oldest engineering college of India. It has currently been accorded Institute of National Importance Status in accordance with the NIT Act. In 2004, the then Government of India decided to upgrade the college to NIT status as the state of Bihar had lost its only REC located at Jamshedpur after its division. All RECs were gradually upgraded to NIT status after a decision taken by the government, as a pivotal step towards creating more centres of excellence in technical education like the now famous IITs.
In accordance with the Government of India's broad objective to have at least one NIT per state, Bihar College of Engineering was the first institute to be directly upgraded to NIT status. NIT Patna has taken rapid strides ever since it was accorded NIT status. With regularization of academic sessions and significant steps in the direction of improving infrastructure,it surely looks set to justify its up gradation and carve a niche of its own. New departments have been added and placements have improved significantly. The college is fast catching up with the more illustrious NITs. The newly earned INI status will further help in strengthening the academic programs with powers to frame its own academic policy.
