National Institute of Technology, Rourkela in Orissa, INDIA (NIT), formerly known as the Regional Engineering College (REC), is one of the top premier national level institutions for technical education in India. NIT is a joint undertaking of the government of India and the government of Orissa. NIT Rourkela was established in 1961 under the able vision of the then CHief Minister of Orissa Biju Patnaik. Its foundation stone was laid by the then Prime MInister Of India Pt. Jawharlal Nehru. Today, nearly fifty years later, NIT Rourkela continues to contribute significantly to the growth of the techno-economic strength of the country in a number of ways. It has produced high quality engineers and scientists, and continues to do so. Today, alumni of NIT Rourkela are doing well in various capacities as entrepreneurs, managers, technocrats, administrators, consultants, advisers and as faculty and researchers, both in India and abroad. At home, they are contributing to the growth of the techno-economic strength of India and also as entrepreneurs, thereby generating employment.
