Techofes '12, our thirty-sixth edition is planned for 15–18 February 2012.

Introduction

Techofes is the annual cultural festival of College of Engineering Guindy, Anna University, Chennai held in mid February, and is one of the most popular cultural festivals in South India. Techofes is held for 4 nights and 3 days which draws a footfall of about 40,000 students from more than 250 colleges across South India. Techofes, now in its thirty sixth edition, has snowballed to become one of the biggest fests in India. The festival draws the best talents of South India to its competitions, covering areas ranging from music and drama to literary, games, arts and quizzing. There are several events focussed on building social responsibility amongst the youth. Professional Shows and workshops by various groups and prodigies from all over the country are an added attraction. Techofes is all about bigger, more enthusiastic participation, high performance competitions, amazing pro shows, innovative workshops and attractive prizes.

Past editions

Techofes '06 took place starting 10 February 2006.

Techofes '07 took place starting 14 February 2007. The special visitor was actor Vikram and the showpiece event was a concert by Vasundra Das

Techofes '10 took place starting 14 February 2010. It included a special screening of Aayirathil Oruvan at the presence of its director Selvaraghavan. Pro-nite saw a performance by Karthik

Techofes '11 took place starting 16 February 2011. It saw film making workshops by with Gautham Menon and Sameera Reddy.

Techofes '12 is planned for 15–18 February 2012.

Pronites

Pronite, the wing of Techofes that organizes pro-shows or concerts, is the biggest crowd puller. Pronite has hosted music legends such as Hariharan, Chinmayi, Karthik, Shankar Mahadevan, Illayaraja, SP Balasubramanyam, Sivamani, Stephen Devassy, Benny Dayal, Naresh Iyer, Vasundara Das.

Star attraction

Techofes has witnessed several top notch celebrities and legends, right from Sivaji Ganesan, Padmini, Vaijayantimala, Vijay, Karthi, Selvaraghavan, Vairamuthu, Gautham Menon, AR Rahman, PC Sreeram & Vikram.

Choreo-nite Choreo-nite is one of the most watched competition in Techofes. Finalists of the dance competition perform for an audience of 15000 in the acclaimed Open air Theatre, familiarly the OAT of Anna University. The acrobatic and artistic finalists are judged by renowned choreographers like Raja Sundaram.

Rock show To add the missing international flavour, Techofes ’12 is about to host an international band, performing for the first time in India, the details of which will be disclosed shortly.

Competitions

Competitions cater to the culturally enthusiastic people in different colleges across the country by giving them a stage to showcase their talent. Each of these events have heavy cash prizes and dedicated college teams battling it out for the top prize. This year, Techofes’12 has planned to organize a MIDNIGHT QUIZ, the finals of which will be conducted when the clock ticks 12 at night.

Art events such as Flower Arrangement, Veg Carving, Junk Arts and Collage

Public speaking events such as Just a Minute (JAM), Ship Wreck, Spell Bee

Creative events such as Face Painting, Fireless Cooking, Mehendi and Pencil sketching

Film/movie making and Photography contests, judged by acclaimed directors

PC and Wii Gaming events

Treasure Hunts and Material Hunts

Multiple category quizzes

Techofes Exclusive events such as Lollu Express, Pickup Drop Escape and Hunts in CEG

Workshops in the arts and other areas

Professional shows, entertaining guest lectures and Celebrity concerts

Best of the Festival events (Variety Show, Choreo-Nite and Mr & Ms Techofes)

Informals

Informals department organizes fun, wacky and spontaneous events for the crowd that comes to Techofes. Adventurous events like treasure hunt, photographic hunt, material hunt and fun events like paintball, standstill, footloose, Street games are a part of this informals.

Hospitality

Tamil Nadu is well known for its hospitality. Our College, which has its roots in the culture of Chennai, is much acclaimed for its hospitality. Each college is assigned a volunteer who is a first year student of CEG-Anna University to take personal care of the college team. A team of around 150-200 students work in this cell.

Theme

Kerala culture. This year, we have planned to portray and exhibit the Kerala culture in our events. The events kickstart with the traditional Chendamelam, and this year’s Techofes will also have KATHAKALI performance. Techofes’12 will focus on the almost extinct martial arts ‘KALARIPUTTU’. By foraying the rich and diversified culture of India, we strive to preserve the traditional values. Socio Political issues Techofes, though a cultural event, also concentrates on socio-political issues through eminent politicians and social activists. Techofes strives to bring out the social values and political awareness embedded in the young minds.

Yes, this is the condition of the modern developing India. Even though the Right to Education act was passed in 2009 we're still struggling to bring the poor helpless children to school. Even today on the road I see children begging and laboring to fill their stomach. It's not like they don't want to study, it's just that they did not get the opportunity that you got. Don't you feel helpless and sad when a small boy tugs at your shirt and begs you for money? Since you were lucky enough to have the opportunity of attending school then college, it's upon you to make sure that every Indian child who wishes to study, gets the opportunity to study. Lets work towards 100% literacy. Let's work towards a smarter India.

Techofes strives to work towards this by contributing a specific amount from our cultural fund towards improving literacy rate. Sponsors & Past Associates Techofes has attracted sponsorships from various corporates due to huge participation of students from all over South India. Many prominent names including Airtel, Vodafone, Pepsi, Samsung, ONGC, State Bank of India, Saint Gobain, Canara Bank, India Cements, Zuari Cements, TVH have been associated with Techofes. Some of our media associates were The Hindu, Inox, Radio One, SS Music.

With a heavy footfall of over 40,000 in 4-days, association with Techofes is a matter of prestige and pride for the corporate involved and is reflected in the range of sponsorships it attracts.

Organisation

Techofes is organized by Students Association and Arts Society(SAAS), an elected, student-run, non-profit organisation. Its team consists of students with the hierarchy order as Core Coordinators, Core Group Members, Coordinators and Organisers. The Techofes team is headed by 2 Overall Coordinators working in collaboration with the twenty two Core Group members who head the various departments Pronites, Competitions, Logistics, Informals, Finance, Marketing, Media, Publicity, Services, Hospitality, Human Resources and Food and Beverages. The Coordinators are in charge of the various events and are assisted by the Organisers in their endeavours. This core team is constituted early in the year and works over a period of about eight months in preparation of the 4 day carnival, Techofes. With an approximate strength of 600, this team works on conceptualisation to successful execution every year and creates one of India’s largest college cultural festivals. The Techofes team is composed of students of all years of the institute shouldering the entire responsibility of the festival with no assistance from any event management company or professionals.
