Natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, storms, typhoons, tornadoes, floods and tsunamis have devastated countries and continents from time immemorial. The powerful earthquakes and the consequent Tsunami that hit Japan on the 11th of March 2011 causing unimaginable destruction and devastation including nuclear accidents assessed as the most serious in their severity; the fierce storms that spawned a series of devastating tornadoes, and the winds that wiped out homes and businesses in some of the southern states of the USA recently, have sent shockwaves to the entire world giving a positive indication that no country is free from such natural disasters and that anything might happen at any time to any country.

This clear indication has prompted many countries and governments to pay more attention to the mechanics of disaster management and establish disaster management authority. Kanyakumari District in Tamilnadu wherein lies the sprawling campus of the Noorul Islam University also experienced a few years back a devastating Tsunami that literally swallowed many coastal villages in the district.

This first hand experience of the destructive and devastating nature of a Tsunami spurred the Noorul Islam University (NIU) to give serious thought to disaster management. The University, with its sense of social commitment, realized the importance of educating the young men and women of India on the varied aspects of disaster management. The university thought further and rightly too, that an International Conference on Disaster Management would be an ideal platform for the students and teachers to get proper and sufficient exposure to new ideas and practicalities pertaining to disaster management.

Accordingly, the School of Management Studies and the Department of HRM of the NIU in collaboration with the Department of Civil Engineering, NIU and NIMS, NIMS Medicity, Trivandrum took a firm decision to organize an international conference on “Comprehensive Disaster Management” with the conference theme “Strategic Management Solutions for Strengthening Resilience”, on the 27th & 28th of January 2012 at the NIU campus.

Abstract Format

1. All submissions must be in electronic format and sent to

Submissions received by fax or hardcopy will not be accepted. 2. 250 word abstract addressing the Conference focus

3. A presentation summary outlining major points and participant outcomes

4. A Brief biographical sketch on the professional training and experience of the participant

5. Submissions must be in English

6. An Abstract must be titled and include the author’s name, his Institution/Agency Confirmed speakers will be required to submit a power point presentation along with their paper.
